How to Switch Internet Providers When Moving — A Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up internet at a new home is straightforward if you plan ahead — and a mess if you don't. Most people either cancel their old service too early and go days without internet, or forget to check if their provider covers the new address until the last minute. Here is exactly what to do and when.

1Check availability at your new address 2–3 weeks before moving

Before you cancel anything, find out which providers serve your new address. Coverage varies dramatically — your current provider may not operate there at all, and a better provider may be available. Call Find My Internet Plan and we will check all four carriers (AT&T, Xfinity, Frontier, T-Mobile) at your new address in a single call, compare current promotions, and place your order — all without you having to contact each provider separately.

2Schedule installation before you move in

Technician appointments at major providers typically book out 5–14 days. Schedule as soon as you confirm your new address is eligible. If you are transferring an existing Xfinity or AT&T account to a new address, contact us to process the move — the process is different from a new order and usually takes less time.

3Do not cancel your current service until your new installation is confirmed

Wait until you have a confirmed installation date at your new address before scheduling cancellation of your current service. Cancel your old service to end the day after your move-out date — not before. This prevents paying for two services simultaneously while ensuring you do not have a gap in connectivity during the overlap days.

4Return your old provider's equipment on time

Xfinity, AT&T, Frontier, and T-Mobile all require equipment return within a specific window — usually 30 days of cancellation. Unreturned equipment results in fees of $100–$350 per device. Use a prepaid return label from your provider's website, ship it through UPS or FedEx, and keep the receipt. Do not assume returning equipment in-store counts without a receipt.

5Enable AutoPay at your new address to lock in the advertised rate

All four providers require AutoPay enrollment with a bank account or debit card to receive their advertised promotional pricing. Set this up within your first billing cycle at the new address. Missing the AutoPay enrollment window at some providers means your bill will be $5–$10 higher per month until you enroll.

6Test your new connection before the technician leaves

Before the technician leaves, run a speed test on a device connected via Ethernet — not Wi-Fi. This gives you a baseline and confirms the connection is performing at the subscribed speed. Note the result and contact your provider immediately if speeds are significantly below what you ordered.

⚠ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Cancelling your current service before your new installation is confirmed
  • Assuming your current provider covers your new address without checking
  • Missing the AutoPay enrollment window and paying a higher monthly rate
  • Returning equipment without getting a receipt — always get proof of return
  • Not running a wired speed test before the technician leaves
